Did you know that the much-loved ‘made for human living’ urban planning concept that makes València such a great place to live was born out of a crisis from a natural disaster?
It was October 14, 1957 when the Turia River broke its banks and flooded three-quarters of the city of València. Claiming the lives of over sixty people and bringing the city to a standstill, it was declared a state of emergency and a national disaster.
The following year, an ambitious plan to reroute the river began.
Work was completed in 1969 and the final result is the ‘Green River’, otherwise known today in modern day València as ‘Jardín del Turia’ or ‘Turia Park València’.
The Turia Park València is one of the biggest attractions in València and one of the most visited parks in Spain with landscaped gardens that stretch from the City of Arts and Science to the Bioparc – two of València’s most important tourist destinations.
The City of Arts and Science is an ultra-modern scientific and cultural complex – known in Spanish as la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias – and the largest in Europe, with its striking buildings symbolic of València’s city landscape.
Set in an expansive area of just under two kilometres in the former bed of the Turia River, the group of six futuristic structures – most of them designed by Valèncian architect Santiago Calatrava – have a seemingly endless capacity for hours of entertainment and stimulation.
Bioparc València is a ten-hectare zoo park owned by the City Council of València and cleverly designed using the “zooimmersion” concept where visitors are surrounded by meticulous recreations of animal natural habitats. Social animals that live together in groups are displayed, as well as groups of different species that coexist in the same habitats. Predatory species are integrated into the visual space, but are separated from other species by barriers invisible to the eye of the visitor, ensuring the safety of both the animals and the people. The animals, vegetation and landscape provide opportunities for discovering the complexity of natural ecosystems.
Bioparc València showcases fifty-two animal exhibits and species where you can see lions, hippos, rhinos, reptiles, zebras, monkeys, giraffes, and birds – and all within the expansive grounds of Turia Park València.
Turia Park València is a monumental five-mile green public park interwoven into a dense and diverse urban fabric, empathetically designed around the historic city. From the park you can see apartments in València overlooking the beautiful and expansive green areas.
Jardín del Turia spans six hundred feet across its banks and features over four hundred and fifty acres of parkland, with water features and fountains, ponds, open play areas, seating areas, palm trees, walking paths, bicycle paths, beautifully manicured landscapes and blossoming flowers.
Unique to Jardín del Turia is the ingenious homogeneity that intertwines multiple park themes into one. Each section is themed and feels like a separate park experience.
Each of the sections has its own distinct design style, ranging from Ricardo Bofill’s formal gardens with modern touches, built in 1986; and Calatrava’s biomorphic City of Arts and Sciences, completed in 1998; to the sinuous landforms of Header Park by Eduardo de Miguel Rabones, Blake Muñoz Criado, and Vicente Corell Farinós, completed in 2004. The final zone connecting the park to the Mediterranean Sea and the city’s marina district has been master planned by Tomas Llavador Achitects.
Flats in Valencia provide access to a quality of city lifestyle that is strategically designed and planned ‘for human living’ from València’s clever urban planning concept.
